Hi Matthew. How about the north? Salta offers some incredible landscapes, distinct culture and is a real contrast from Buenos Aires, which is where most foreigners choose to base themselves. You'd be more immersed in the language there too and less likely to end up hanging out in an expat crowd. It's also cheaper up north. You could consider a volunteer project which enables cheap accommodation? There's lots of inspiration here: http://www.volunteersouthamerica.net/ Your budget is extremely tight. When you say this figure is 'spending money', do you mean you have a separate accommodation fund? I hope so because otherwise you'll be stuck. As a guideline, in Buenos Aires if you want a decent, short-term room in a shared apartment, you'd use just about all that fund over four months with nothing to spare for food, transport or entertainment.
